Making it to the Gyms early in the morning definitely have their place. Truth be told, without wellness & fitness clubs, many would never embark on a work out. There exist a group of people, and you may well be in this group, who literally need a gym-like environment filled with people, fitness machines & weights to inspire them to workout.
A gym atmosphere does a lot to push some folks into shape; maybe it's the sight of people in better condition than we are, or maybe just the direct opposite. However the case, there are also another who are worse off & make us feel better about ourselves; Now, whatever the reason, wellness clubs do a great job to assist thousands & maybe millions of people to exercise and achieve a better fitness level that keeps them healthy.
There are quite a number of aerobic exercises and classes, each appealing to different individuals. They include: Tae Bo, Treadmills, yoga, stair-steppers, spinning classes, strictly aerobic classes, kick boxing, pilates, amongst others. And they are equally effective if practiced with the right vigor and dedication. In most cases, these aerobic classes and activities take place inside a building, normally a wellness or fitness club.
There is yet an activity which has proven to be healthier & more physically engaging than any of those mentioned earlier: It's hiking! You should see the pictures and read the stories on kandooadventures.com/machu-picchu-trek!!
Hiking is One of the best all-round aerobics that practically anyone can be involved in. And one interesting part is that it costs absolutely no dime to get your practice on with hiking. This is simply because it's outdoor and its terrain is natures. No doubt that the act of going to the gym, stamping on the pedals, tramping the treadmill or straining on the stair-stepper will definitely take off undesired body fat and do one's body good. But you see, like I have always held as truth, a gym, made by man, simply can't compete with nature. In form or in function.
Now enough of the excitement bursting from my head, here are a list of seven benefits of hiking that an indoor aerobic activity wouldn't give you:
1. A breath of fresh, crisp air! It is no news that fresh air is healthier to take in, than the body-odor-sweat-laden gym air. The taste aren't the same too.
2. Hiking is Costs effective. It costs less to hike. Once you've bought a good pair of hiking boots or shoes, the adventure begins. No registration fee. No membership fee. You can't say the same for indoor aerobics.
3. And then the crowd! Gyms are crowded. It is practical impossible to really be alone with your thoughts in a gym filled with noise from people and from music. Hiking provides you this luxury of solitude.
4. Hiking makes the brain to function more. An increase in brain function that indoors activity wouldn't give.
5. You can indeed hike without a trail. But you would have to wait for one if you are using machines or weights in a gym.
6. Hiking stimulates and keeps the mind sharp in every physical sense. Indoor aerobics wouldn't give the same result.
7. There is variety with Outdoors. All Gyms are pretty much one and the same.
Sometimes in year 2004, results were made public of an interesting study that showed how hiking influences the fats & sugars in one's blood. The researchers from the Vorarlberg Institute for Vascular Investigation and Treatment in Austria announced their findings following a thorough comparison of two groups of people that were selected for the purpose of the study. Picking a choice location in the Alps at a ski resort mountain, One group hiked uphill and downhill for 8 weeks while the second group were moved by cable car to a higher elevation, then made to hike downhill. After the 8 weeks period, the two groups switched their respective programs, i.e those that hiked uphill were then moved by a cable car, and those that were initially moved uphill by a cable car, hiked uphill themselves.
The research findings showed that hiking both uphill & downhill gives excellent health benefits; both directions of hiking reduced LDL cholesterol levels, commonly called "bad" cholesterol. The research further revealed that Triglyceride levels were reduced from hiking uphill only, while downhill hiking was nearly twice as effective in reducing blood sugars and improving glucose tolerance.
Thats some really interesting result!
Though I have always had a bias for hiking as regards how great it is for the body, this particular study gave details and shares information about hiking that I didn't know.
Before the results of this research became known, the benefits of hiking could only be theorized. There had been no true scientific-based information available. Truly Hiking is great for raising our fitness levels and making us stay healthy!
